Doctors linking heart disease with cholesterol are ‘misguided’, say obesity experts

The long-held believe that cholesterol levels are linked to heart disease is based on “cherry-picked science” that has misguided doctors in the prevention of heart disease, a new report claims. The authors, including two leading international doctors, criticise the aggressive focus on lowering LDL-cholesterol, which is known as “bad” cholesterol, with statins drugs, especially for healthy people. Statins are now the most commonly prescribed medicines in the UK. The popular consensus is that having high levels of LDL-cholesterol can lead to plaque buildup in your arteries and result in heart disease and stroke, the report’s authors say. The researchers, including obesity specialists Professor Robert Lustig and Dr Aseem Malhotra, accuse the proponents of statins, including the Lancet medical journal, of “trying to silence dissenting views”.
