The Muscle Prof - NO

In a previous post we looked at cellular swelling and the potential benefits we get from “the pump”. In today's post we are going to touch on two supplements that may enhance vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). The amount of vasodilation that we experience is in large part due to the amount of endothelial-derived nitric oxide produced during exercise (Maiorana, et al. 2003). We know that cellular swelling is one of the key mechanisms behind muscular hypertrophy (Shoenfield, 2010). With enhanced nitric oxide production we may not only increase the muscle pump (e.g. cellular swelling), but research has shown improvements in power output and aerobic endurance as well (Cermack, et al. 2012). We have two main pathways by which we produce nitric oxide. When supplementing, theoretically utilizing both may optimize endothelial NO bioactivity. In other words, we could produce more nitric oxide and induce a greater pump! Both L-citrulline and L-arginine work to produce NO through the arginine-nitric oxide pathway, however; citrulline has been shown to increase blood vessel concentrations of arginine by up to 80% (Kuhn, et al. 2002). This is significant because when supplementing with arginine alone we do not get nearly that amount in the blood vessels, as most arginine is decomposed in the intestines and in the liver by arginase, an arginine degrading enzyme. Citrulline is not broken down by arginase in the intestines or liver, but rather it makes its way to the blood vessels before its conversion to arginine and subsequently, NO (Morris. 2004).
The Second major pathway we can utilize to enhance endothelial vasodilation is the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Dietary nitrates that we ingest through certain foods utilize this pathway under ischemic, hypoxic, and acidic conditions (Wetizberg, et al 2010). The most efficient means to date of inorganic nitrate supplementation is currently whole food sources. Shown in the graph above food sources with the highest nitrate concentrations per 100g servings are as follows; mesclun mix(188mg nitrates), butter leaf lettuce (200mg nitrates), cilantro (247mg nitrates), rhubarb (281mg nitrates), and arugula (480mg nitrates) (Greger. 2012). Wylie, et al found plasma levels of nitrite, the precursor to NO, rose accordingly in response to supplementing with inorganic nitrates (2013). However, more and more supplements are popping up either beet root extract and various derivatives in them, which may have some efficacy.
If the goal is to optimize this pathway, supplementation with effective amount of citrulline and dietary nitrates may be a good approach.
