Following up from our previous post showing weight rebound following diet I mentioned this is likely due to both psychological and physiological adaptions. For example, hunger hormones such as leptin and ghrelin may become disrupted during a prolonged calorie deficit. This may cause you to over eat or struggle to control ab-libitum food intake post diet. Physiological changes may be alterations in resting metabolic rate, especially if you lost muscle mass during the diet. This can also come from alterations in NEAT (movement or activity that isn’t classed as exercise, e.g. taking the stairs or elevator), with studies showing energy expenditure from NEAT is reduced when dieting.

Although this is becoming more well-known it’s still surprising when you see the studies showing weight rebound following a diet. This is likely due to a combination of psychological and physiological adaptations. This demonstrates the need to build a sustainable plan for you or your clients that incorporates a balanced lifestyle where fitness and diet is enjoyable, especially if you have no desire to compete or strict time limitations.
