Using DBHB instead of glucose increased the cardiac output and hydraulic work but reduced the oxygen consumption – i.e. for less oxygen, the heart was able to deliver more cardiac output and hydraulic work.

A key assumption we’re making in this article is that the effects of ketone metabolism on the heart mimic those on the brain. The reason we don’t have a similar study on the brain is that brain tissue is very non-homogenous (not the same throughout) and also there are less quantifiable outputs compared to the heart. We know from a few animal models that the ketogenic diet seems to increase the amount of ATP in the brain as measurable quantities. Furthermore, this study found increased ATP in the hippocampus (part of the brain involved in emotion and memory) while studying the effects of the ketogenic diet (KD) on a particular metabolic genetic abnormality and this study found significantly higher levels of ATP in the brain of the KD diet group over the control group.

Ker je keto tako protivnetna in poveča krvni pretok so določeni efekti na zdravje vidni zelo kmalu. Še sam sem kdaj presenečen čeprav delam s tem že nekaj let..

I've seen a lot of buzz going around about ketogenic dieting and ketone salts recently. Interesting timing as this abstract from Experimental Biology meeting out in which we collaborated with Dr. Mike Roberts lab at Auburn University. This is one of the first studies to supplement with exogenous BHB salts. Some highlights of the study:
1) Terminal masses of the study were LCKD +Ketones < LCKD < WD+ Ketones < WD
2) Brown fat was elevated 41% in LCKD+Ketones relative to LCKD

3) Food efficiency (g mass gained/g food consumed) was reduced in the LCKD + ketones and WD + ketones groups.

There are several more planned and underway but this is a good start for getting an understanding of some potential mechanisms underlying adaptations.

Abstract

objective Low-carbohydrate ketogenic diets (LCKDs) are a common modality to facilitate weight loss/control; however, the frequency of adherence needed to attain these benefits has not been adequately described. In addition, LCKDs have the propensity to elevate circulating ketone bodies, thus supplementing ketones may confer additional health benefits. The purpose of this study was to examine potential health benefits of an intermittent LCKD diet (AIM 1), and the effects of ketone salt supplementation (AIM 2).

METHODS In both AIMs groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats (9–10 weeks of age, 300–325 g) were provided isoenergetic amounts of a LCKD (17 g/day, 5.2 kcal/g, 20.2% protein, 10.3% CHO, 69.5% fat) or a wester diet (WD) (20 g/day, 4.5 kcal/g, 15.2% protein, 42.7% CHO, 42.0% fat) for 6 weeks. For AIM 1 an additional group of rats was fed LCKD for 5 consecutive days followed by two days of WD (LCKD+WD). In AIM 2 two additional groups of rats were either fed LCD or WD, but were also given ad libitum ketone salts mixed in water, LCD+K and WD+K. In both aims, rats were housed in resistance-loaded voluntary running wheels.

RESULTS In AIM 1, LCKD and LCKD+WD weighed 15% less, had significantly lower insulin, and triglycerides than WD (p<0.01). Additionally, omental and peri-renal fat depots were reduced (p<0.05), and food efficiency (g mass gained/g food consumed) was reduced in the LCKD+WD group (p≤0.05). In AIM 2, terminal body masses were LCKD+K<LCKD<WD+K<WD (all differences p≤0.05). WD+K presented the highest levels of serum triglycerides (p≤0.01). Brown fat was elevated 41% in LCKD+K relative to LCKD (p≤0.01). Also, food efficiency was reduced in the LCKD+K and WD+K groups (p≤0.05).

CONCLUSIONS Interestingly, AIM 1 suggests that intermittent ketogenic dieting with exercise conferred similar health benefits as strict ketogenic dieting. Additionally, AIM 2 suggests that ketone salt supplementation with exercise attenuated fat mass deposition regardless of dietary assignment.

Facebook je omogočil, da sem po dolgih letih v Budimpešti naletel na prijatelja Boruta Šemrla. Za mlade naj povem, da je Borut eden naših najboljših bb vseh časov. Predvsem pa je v 90tih letih veljal za top trenerja, velikega poznavalca (ne le prakse temveč tudi teorije) prehrane, dodatkov, treninga.. Imel je tudi gym in bil eden prvih, ki je uvažal dodatke. Vsi smo hodili po nasvet k njemu. Ustvaril in treniral je nekaj top slo tekmovalcev. Bil je kot nekakšen mentor in tudi
idol..

Potem pa ga po dolgih letih srečaš in ti reče. Grom hvala ti... Totalno si mi spremenil življenje. Ne razmišljam več o hrani, nisem več odvisen od hrane, kljub temu da se staramo sem brez problema stalno v formi, imam veliko energije in sem stalno zbran, obroke imam 1 do 2x na dan. Še to kdaj ne. V zadnjih 3 letih od kar te spremljam in sem v ketozi se mi je spremenilo življenje. Ko sem te bral se mi je zdelo smiselno in pričel sem raziskovati. Opazil sem popolnoma enake učinke kot jih opisuješ ti. To je to..

Ketonska telesca v boj proti anksioznosti?

Na področju raziskovanja vplivov ketonskih telesc v zadnjem času prihaja do vidnega premika od ketogene diete same k raziskovanju vpliva ketonskih telesc, ki jih bodisi zaužijemo ali v telo dobimo prek infuzije. V začetku decembra so v reviji Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience objavili rezultate zanimivega eksperimenta, v katerem so preiskovali vpliv ketonskih telesc na anksioznost podgan.
Stres pri podganah preučujejo s t.i. dvignjenim štirikrakim labirintom, ki ima dva kraka ograjena (zaprta kraka), dva pa odprta, torej neograjena. Tak labirint je učinkovita metoda za preizkušanje naravnega konflikta pri živalih, kjer se srečujeta naravna radovednost po raziskovanju novega okolja in znani strah živali pred odprtimi prostori. Na podlagi časa in razdalje, ki jo živali opravijo na odprtih ali zaprtih krakih, s pomočjo statističnih metod ugotavljajo njihovo anksioznosti podobno obnašanje.

V eksperimentu, ki so ga opravili ameriški in madžarski znanstveniki, so skupini podgan dodajali ketonske estre, ketonske soli in olje MCT v majhni dozi 7 dni. Ostale pa so razdelili v štiri skupine, od katerih je bila ena kontrolna, druga je dobila majhno dozo estrov, tretja visoko dozo estrov (~25 g/kg telesne teže dnevno), četrta pa visoko dozo ketonskih soli in olja MCT (~25 g/kg telesne teže dnevno) – tako hranjenje je trajalo 83 dni.

Ugotovitve so upravičile doslej znan vpliv ketonskih telesc na anksioznost: podgane, ki so dobivale ketonske soli in olje MCT so preživele največ časa na odprtih kratkih, prav tam naredile največ poti, hkrati pa so se najkasneje odločile za vstop v zaprta kraka. Tako obnašanje je značilno za živali z nizko stopnjo anksioznosti.

Dodajanje zunanjih ketonskih telesc bo lahko učinkovito pomagalo pri zmanjševanju anksioznosti brez rigorozne ketogene diete, ki za veliko ljudi pomeni preveliko odpovedovanje in prestrog režim prehranjevanja ( seveda tisti, ki smo na tej prehrani dolgo vemo, da to sploh ni isto res :)). Avtorji priporočajo nadaljnje raziskovanje anksiolitičnega delovanja ketonskih telesc tudi na ljudeh.
